the story behind it
Aunt Judi’s Peppermint Bark
There are some recipes that simply mean Christmas. This is one of them.
Every holiday season, you could count on Aunt Judi showing up with a tin full of peppermint bark. It wasn’t officially Christmas until someone reached for a piece, and before long, there were only crumbs left. Sweet, creamy, pepperminty, and perfectly crunchy, it was one of those treats everyone looked forward to year after year.
Like so many family recipes, this one was never written down. When Aunt Judi passed away, the recipe went with her. I searched, I asked questions, and I pieced together every memory I could, but in the end, this version came from a whole lot of trial, error, and hope.
I’d like to think she’d laugh at me standing in my kitchen, making batch after batch, trying to get it just right. Some were too minty. Some weren’t minty enough. Some had the wrong crunch. But eventually… I took one bite, closed my eyes, and suddenly it was Christmas again.
That’s when the tears came.
Is it exactly hers? I honestly don’t know. But it’s as close as my heart could remember, and sometimes that’s enough.
If you’re wondering whether this recipe is worth making, just know this: I cried when I finally got it right, so you know it’s Grief Girl approved.
May this peppermint bark bring a little sweetness to your holidays, remind you of someone you love, and become part of your own family’s traditions—just like Aunt Judi made it part of ours. ❤️
